North India tour

OM Ganeshaya namaha
PILGRIMAGE TO NORTH INDIA

After my retirement from service on 1.-8.2005 I had an inclination to go on a tour to some important places to free myself from the routine schedule . While I was planning for such a tour, one of my neighbours Mr.Gopal came up with a North India package tour being organized by one of their friend. I also saw their tour programme and paid an advance amount for the tour.

The package programme was planned from 30.9.05 to 27.10.05. The organizer’s supplied their booklet containing the entire tour programme, the date of departure, accommodation ,place of visits the addresses of pilgrims . In a nutshell all necessary information about the yatra were brought out to enable the pilgrims the type of cloths, temperature and necessary essential drugs to meet any eventuality. They also issued Identify card super scribing the name of the Pilgrimage service ,name of the traveller, age etc and also the important places to be visited , name of the lodge, Yatri Nivas and phone numbers in order to facilitate any emergency.

On 30.9.05 , 43 pilgrims including the tour manager of Sri Badrinath Pilgrimage Service boarded the Karnataka Express for our journey to Agra. All the pilgrims were so exited of the tour. Most of them have crossed 45 years, retired and aged persons. For most of the pilgrims it was the first visit.

Initially, the Manager of the tour, distributed the food packets . The entire journey was colourful and comfortable.

As per the scheduled programme, we reached Agra Railway Station on 2.10.05 at about 8.am. the organizers have arranged their bus to ferry us to the Kaveri lodge, near Dayal Bagh for our stay. We were allotted rooms after making groups of four. I was asked to join a team wherein there was one Bachelor by name Shri Nagaraj and a couple Mr & Mrs Rangaraj Initially, I introduced myself to create a good atmosphere. After a cold water bath, we were served with a good food..

After Lunch, we boarded a 45 seater Luxury bus (displaying the seating chart) for our journey to Mathura , the abode of Lord Krishna. We also saw the encroachment of the temple by a mosque. Later, visited Birla Mandir and Brindavan. During the course of our visit to the temple,we come across lot of monkeys .One of the pilgrims literally lost his identify card issued by the organizer’s. Though the birth place is very sacred to many Hindus, it is very unfortunate that the surrounding areas are not being kept clean. .The same day we returned to our lodge at Agra.

The next day on 3.10.05 we boarded our journey to Jaipur by 5.am and had our breakfast in the mid way. Around 11.am we reached the famous Pink city Jaipur . First we visited Raja Mansing Palace. Here my camera went out of order. It could not click even one snap. I was very much disappointed. Firstly, I had not taken any camera out for any such events. Because of my ignorance or because of some fault in the camera, it did not work. I tried my level best with the available knowledge but no use. Hence, I have decided to procure a camera exclusively to know some sensible technique. Obviously, this incident has made my mood out . After having our lunch in nearby garden, we proceeded towards Amber Palace, Museum,Hawai Mahal, ,Mubarak Mahal, Jantar Mantar, the famous open air observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh and. it is very interesting to see how in olden days the calendar /time etc., were being calculated with the help of Sun and other mathematical extravaganza were seen. The art and architecture of Jaipur Palace and surrounding areas were really fantastic. Later, we also visited Birla Mandir.

I feel one has to see these places in their life time. To know much about the place, I purchased a CD containing all the important places. It is distressing to sees the damage and destruction done by the Moguls.in these places. Some of the precious things have been removed in the museums and some items are replica During the course of our visit we visited Government sponsored Show Room near the Jaipur Palace where number of garments, jewelry , cloths ,colourful varieties of bed spreads ,saris and rajai were at display. Some items seems to be costly and as far as Rajai’s are concerned, it is really good and within our budget. Later we returned to our Hotel room at Agra.

On the Morning of 4.10.05 after breakfast, we proceeded towards the world famous Taj Mahal.. The entire surrounding is being maintained neatly. However, the city is not that much neat when compared to the tourist in flow both National and International level. There is a good security in and around Taj Mahal... From the Bus terminus, we were taken in a battery operated Auto service .Since the Camera was not functioning, I took an instant snap through a photographer at the place by paying Rs.50/- The photo has come out very well. After visiting Taj Mahal, we visited the Agra Fort,Dayalbagh. The same day after our lunch, we proceeded towards Allahabad.

We reached Allahabad by around 7.am. We got into Bangad Dharmashala,D.T.Road where some half a dozen rooms were booked for our stay. Although, the accommodation provided to us were quite sufficient,. but the bath room and toilet facilities were not up to the mark. Since it is a Dharmashala, one could not expect neatness. It is an every day affair and they are helpless. After, a cup of coffee all the pilgrims proceeded towards the Holy Sangama –Ganga – Yamuna and Saraswati river with the help of three boats. All of us had a good dip. . The boatmen charged Rs.30/- per person.. Some people performed Pitru karya and Veni Dhana. In the evening we visited the famous Anand Bhavan, the birth place of Pandit Nehru, now dedicated to the Nation..The library & office being used by Motilal Nehru was really worth seeing.. We also visited an exhibition which is a testimony to Nehru’s life and Independence struggle. Later we visited the Veni Madhava temple and return to Dharmashala for night halt.

The next day 6.10.05, after breakfast by about 8.am, we left for Gaya and reached the designated Hotel Jeevak International, near Maha Bodi Society,Gaya. Here. I got my Camera repaired . As has been grouped earlier, our team occupied a good room in the Hotel. At about 11.pm we had our dinner.

The next day, 7.10.05, after a cup of coffee, some of us had bath at Suryakunda to perform pitrukarya at Vishnupada temple. The priest charged each of us Rs.700/ for conducting the pitrukarya. It is painful to say that the upkeep and maintenance at the temple was not good.. The place is very significant and whatever may be the shortfall it does not matter much. . The rice supplied, the betel leaf, plantain etc., are very poor in quality and content. Above all, lot of House flies attacked us while doing our rituals. At last the programme concluded within two hours. We prayed our respect to Vishnupada and other places before returning to the residence of the Priest where our lunch was arranged. It is a pity, here also the priest was not considerate. There is much to say but what is the use. Because of the significance of the place, there is nothing more to comment. Sarvam Krishnarpanam.

By about 4.P.M, we visited the 80 feet Great Buddha stautue built by Japan, Temples built by Nepal,Tibbet and ,Thai, each depicting its own style. The ,Main temple of Lord Buddha, the Bodhee Tank and the Maha Bodhee tree are the main attraction.. It is really exciting to see that apart from India, other countries also contributed towards the spread of Buddism in India . There were many magnificent statues and stupas depicting the art and culture. All these temples are neatly kept. I saw many people sitting near the Bodhee tree where Buddha got enlightenment.. I also sat for a while to get some enlightenment. It is significant to note that thousands of pilgrims do visit this place regularly. The journey was equally pleasant and comfortable. We also saw a pillar built by Emperor Asoka. Unfortunately,we could not see the world renowned Nalanda University, Centre of learning of Buddhist philosophy. I was told that this place is being visited by both people of India and Japan

On the evening of 7th October 05 after our dinner, we left Gaya for Varanasi. We reached Varanasi in the early morning of 8th October 05.. Although there was a general accommodation, we opted for a separate double bed room accommodation at Sri Balananda Teerthasharam by paying Rs.250/- By 7.30.am we had a dip at holy Ganga. It was really a fantastic view for one and all. I have not seen such a river in my life time. After breakfast , all of us went in a boat to visit all the Ghats and also nearby temples in the Varanasi. At last we visited the Kashi Vishwanatha temple. Here also the temple is heavily guarded by security personnel. My room key, nail cutter and organizer were taken away by the security personnel at the gate. More than the pilgrims in the temple, one can see more number of security personnel. While entering the temple Gate, some foreigners were also trying to cross the gate. However, they were not allowed inside the temple since they have no faith in our religion. They were allowed to see the temple outside. With all the sanctity of the river etc., the surrounding area have not been kept neat.

I had a good darshan of Lord Vishwanath. It is really painful to see that here also the original temple has been encroached by a Mosque. One can see the Nandi turning towards the Mosque. The Guide who followed us explained the history behind the main temple and the amount of destruction being made by Moguls. The original Shiva Linga ,we were told has been dumped in the nearby well in the temple premises. Though the temple is sacred for all Hindus, the areas are so congested that it is very difficult to walk on the road leading to the temple. After Lunch and rest we visited Durga Mandir,Sankatamochana temple, Tulasi Mansa Mandir, Birla Mandir and also passed through the Banaras Hindu University.

On 9th , I had my bath and breakfast and waited for one of my nephews to turn up at the Ashram. Mr Raghu & his family accompanied by his in-laws visited me at the Ashram where I was staying .His place is 80 kms away from Varanasi . They spent some time with me and there was a photo session. Raghu took two to three snaps and left in his car with his family. It is unfortunate to mention here that one of the pilgrims lost his money to the tune of Rs.4000/- which he kept in his pant packet. It was reported that while giving his pant for washing, inadvertently he has forgotten to remove the money . After our Lunch , we packed up for our journey to Katmandu via Sonuli. On our way we reached Ghorakpur at 10.pm . We halted at Ghorukpur at a Dharmashala. Two big halls were provided to the entire pilgrims. Unfortunately, here also there were lot of flies and it made our life miserable the entire night. There was also a power shut down, which is very common in these areas. We visited the Golaknath temple and other temples near by. All the temple premises here are maintained very well.

The next morning,10th October 05 after bath and breakfast, we were asked to carry minimum luggage to Kathmandu. Hence, the remaining luggages were dumped in a room and locked. We had our lunch in the midway. We reached Katmandu the same day at 11.am.. We were put up in a Hotel Maharaja Palace, near airport in Katmandu. By and large the Hotel accommodation was very good. Except the temple and nature there is nothing special to mention. On 11th October 05 after breakfast we boarded a mini bus to visit the famous Pashupathi temple. The temple is very ancient surrounded by many shivalingam. It has its own architecture. Animal sacrifice is also being done in the temple especially during Ayudha puja. After the temple visit, no other programme was planned.

The next day,12th October 05, I could not make up for local sight seeing, due to the fact that I was down with severe vomiting and lose motion. I was totally pissed off for the sudden ill health and cursed myself. The previous day due to some indigestion, I had taken some liquid soda, this instead of controlling the indigestion aggravated the situation. Later some of my fellow travelers who also took soda along with me had the same problem and one person while returning the bottle noticed that the soda supplied to us were outdated and made a hue and cry. Since we were in an alien land , we do not want to make this a big issue and hence dropped the issue. As a result I could not see the Swayambhunath temple, Budd Neelakntha and Boudhastupa. I had to take the whole day rest to avoid any further complication to my health. Initially, I thought of cutting short my journey and fly back to Bangalore via Delhi. However, my co-travelers seeing plight gave me some medicine which ultimately controlled my problem. Unfortunately, even we could not locate a doctor, because of Dussera holiday. Mr.Nagaraj who all along traveled with me also developed some problem and he was also planning to get back to Bangalore along with me.The sustained encouragement given by the co-travelers helped us very much to enable us to continue our journey without much problem. After this incident, I had taken precaution by reducing the intake while taking my dinner. With all the pain, I could somehow manage to buy a T’ Shirt here.

On 13th October 05 after our breakfast, we left Katmandu for Ayodhya. It was 10.pm when we reached Ghorakpur. In view of the previous experience at Ghorakpur Dharmashala i.e. mosquito menace, we were forced to leave Ghorakpur after dinner at 11.pm All the remaining luggage were loaded into the bus .To our bad luck, the bus got struck up in a traffic jam due to Vijayadhashami procession. After a gap of nearly two hours slowly it moved towards Ayodhya.

The next day, 14th October about 7.00am we reached Ayodhya. We were put up at Birla Dharmashala. The room provided to us was quite spacious and neat but always haunted by monkeys. We had our bath at Saryu river. It was very pleasant. Here also the area is not being maintained properly. The flow of pilgrims is on the higher side. After bath, we visited Valmiki Bhavan Hanuman Gadi , Seetha rasoti, karseva puram where the temple work is in progress . Some of the stones neatly dressed are numbered.. After Lunch and rest, we visited Rama Janma Bhumi. The entire stretch of Rama Janma Bhumi which is under dispute is a high security zone. All pilgrims are checked before entry. I was carrying Vicks bottle with me for cold. Unfortunately, while checking they noticed the bottle and took away for their custody. Later after visiting the main temple, the security personnel returned the vicks botter. We also visited number of temples adjoining the area.

In the evening,Mrs.Rajalakshmi Gopal, one of the pilgrims rendered a vocal recital and also some Bhajans. Like minded people attendead the programme. She also rendered her voice in singing some classical songs during our pilgrimage especially in temples.

The next day ,15th October 05 after our lunch , by 3.pm we packed up for Haridwar We traveled the entire night and day & reached Haridwar on16th evening. We were lodged in Gujaranwala Bhavan .One thing I have noticed in our journey is that the moment the destination is reached all were at their toes to run for good rooms. Pilgrims who carried additional luggage find it difficult to meet the challenge. Luckily, for us among the four in the team, two were having less luggage and hence could run quickly to take the room.

On the next day,17th October after bath & breakfast we were asked to pack up with less luggage to meet for 4 days for our journey to Kedarnath & Badrinath. . Accordingly, only the required luggage were taken and the rest dumped in a room. We boarded a Mini bus for our journey to Gowrikunda By the time we reached our destination – Gowrikunda it was about 11.am. We made an earnest attempt to get a double bed accommodation and at last successful . All the four shared the room. The room was not that much good compared to other place. The same day arrangements were made for our journey to Kedarnath by horse.
.
On the early morning of 18th October we had our bath at Gowrikunda, a hot spring bath. Although there was a severe cold all along, at this particular place Gowrikunda one can take hot water bath. It was really a thrilling experience to every body. By 5.15.am the horseman arrived and self and Nagaraj were taken in the designated horse . For the first time in my life I was asked to ride on a horse. With all woolen cloths, socks, kulla etc we traveled towards the famous Kedarnath..The journey was really painful since the horse every now and then used to go near dirty water and slipped twice and as a result I was about to fall down. Fortunately, the horseman came to my rescue. Some people experienced oxygen problem at the hill. Right from the beginning of my journey, I prayed Shambo Mahadeva every now and then. It was 14 km journey .Two way it is 28 km. After 7.km I requested the horseman for a break. The puri sagu packed distributed before our journey was very handy. After eating puri-sagu coupled with good tea we started our journey. It was 9.15.am when we reached the main Kedarnath temple.

We were asked to wait for our entry into the temple since the Governor of Uttarachanl was inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. After his departure, we were allowed inside the temple. It was really nice to see the main Deity and the temple with the backdrop comprising hillocks, mountains coupled with snow. Here also, I took one photograph with the backdrop of the temple. After a gap of nearly 90 mts, we started our journey back to Gowrikunda. Although , we were well prepared for our horse ride putting sufficient cloth beneath our seat etc, the buttock portion was painful.and as a result while returning, we were forced to halt our horse journey before 3.km. In fact my friend Mr. Nagaraj was literally exhausted and hence we got down from the horse and walked the remaining distance. It was about 3,pm when we reached Gowrikunda.. Immediately, we took some light lunch and slept to ease our tiredness. In the night around 8.pm I purchased two CDs about Kedarnath and Badrinath yatra.

The next day 19th October by 5.am we were ready with our luggage for our journey to Badrinath. After a cup of tea, we boarded the Mini bus for our journey to Badrinath. There were two mini buses to carry the pilgrims . While on the way to Badrinath, our bus had some mechanical problem and as a result we were stranded for nearly three hours. However, the other mini bus proceeded further to Badrinath. Fortunately, though our bus was stranded , it carried the essential food items and as a result we had no problem as far as food is concerned. Finally, we reached Pippalkoti
around 10.30.pm chill weather and halted at Hotel Alkananda

After night halt, the next day 20th October 05, early morning 5.am we packed up to Badrinath . By the Divine blessings all the pilgrims reached Badrinath safely at 9.00.am. We were lodged in Acharya Sadan, nearby temple. .We had our bath at Taptakunda and visited the temple. Some of the pilgrims performed pitru karya. We had good darshan of the Lord Badrinarayan. One should really admire the people behind construction of Kedarnath and Badrinath temple. These two temples more or less has the same temple architecture.Adi Shankara consecrated both the temples. One Special Significance in Badrinath is one can see SALIGRAM MURTHY embedded with Shree Chakra. The snow fall on the mountain gives additional colour to the temple. After the temple darshan, we had our lunch and after some rest again we visited the temple to witness the Arati. Some of the co-travelers also joined us in the Arati programme. All of us were seated in front of the sanctum sanctorum. After making some purchases, all returned to our lodging.

The next morning 21st October about 4.30.am we left Badrinath. Unfortunately, after passing through Jogi mutt, there was some land slide and we had to wait until the entire debris were removed. All along the route there were lot of vehicles stranded due to this landslide. We just passed through Pippalkoti and in the mid of journey we had our lunch It was about 10.pm when we reached Gujaranwala Bhavan.in Haridwar , where our luggages were kept in a separate room. The next day morning 22nd October, we had our bath in Ganga river. It was really pleasant. In the meanwhile we collected our luggage kept separately in a room . After our breakfast we visited about 11 to 12 temples. Some of the temples were really good both in architecture and style. I took some snaps here also. In the evening , we witnessed the Maha Arati. There was a congregation of about 1000 people to witness the Arati. After Arati, we return to our lodging and had our Dinner.

The next day 23rd, morning after breakfast we left for Rishikesh in a Mini bus. At Rishikesh we visited Laxman Joola,Geetamandir,Paramarthiketan . There were many foreign visitors to this place also.We had an opportunity to see the publication of Bhagvad Geeta in many languages. After visiting these places, we boarded a boat for crossing the river to reach the other end.. I had an opportunity to take some snaps in these places. After crossing the river, we switched over to our Mini bus for our return journey to Haridwar. After our lunch, we had sufficient time left for purchases etc. We visited some shops and purchased Rudrakshi and Tulasi malai. We also collected two bottles of Ganga Jal. In the evening some people again witnessed the Arati at river Ganga. We were asked by the Tour Manager to get ready for departure to Delhi the same night. At about 11.pm we boarded a Luxury bus to Delhi.

Because of the Night journey,we were completely exhausted and at last reached Delhi by 6.am the next day 24th October 05. At Delhi we were accommodated at Hotel Swisston Palace, Karolbagh area. The Hotel was really good . The whole day was set apart for our purchase etc.As usual we had our breakfast and since it was a Monday myself and Nagaraj went round Karolbagh market area. We purchased some sweets for household. We also saw some Metro rail work in Karol bagh area.

As a whole, there is a considerable change and improvement in Delhi . During the course of the day I contacted my earlier boss, a senior Doordarshan Official . To my surprise he visited me at my place and had a chat with me. He enquired about my health and also retired life During the conversation, he informed me that he has fixed the marriage of his youngest daughter during November 05 at Vijayawada. After he left the hotel premises, myself and Nagaraj again went round the Karol Bagh area. The climate was very good. By 9.pm we had our dinner and after listening to News we went to Bed.

The next day morning 25th October 05, after breakfast , we were asked to pack up our luggage and loaded into the bus so as to enable us to complete the local visit and also to catch the Karnataka Express to Bangalore

Accordingly, we visited the Red Fort, Rajghat, Lotus Temple, Qutub Minar,Teenmurthy Bhavan, Birla House, Laxminarayan Mandir etc. At Birla House we had an occasion to see the place where the Father of the Nation was shot dead. The entire area is kept very clean. Here I purchased a key chain with Mahatma Gandhi as a memory to my visit to this place.

At Teenmurthy Bhavan , we saw Nehru’s official chamber, conference hall, and exhibition of Mementoes and other articles .His recorded voices during the Independence struggle were also heard in the Exhibition. We also saw the Official residence of Indira Gandhi and the place where she was shot dead by her own security personnel. One of the pilgrims also lost his purse containing some valuables near Teenmurthy Bhavan. We had our last lunch at the lawns of Teenmurthy Bhavan. Later,we visited India Gate I took some photographs at this place as a memory of my visit.

At the last leg of our visit, we visited the Birla Mandir and witnessed the Aarati. By about 9.30.am we were in the Railway Station. After hectic local trip and also transportation of our luggage into the compartment, all of us had a good relief. There was a lot of joy in everybody’s face since they are returning to Bangalore after al lapse of 27 days. In the train, the Tour Manager, supplied us Curds rice and Puliodarai. Some of the pilgrims who traveled with us carried luggage beyond their capacity which ultimately occupied more space in the train. At about 11.30.pm one of the Co-pilgrims gold chain was snatched while she was asleep.

The next day,26th October 05 full day train journey which was boring. All along, I was reading some magazine and also chatting, I could not sleep the previous night, because one of the fellow pilgrims was snoring at her peak, which of course I am helpless. Every one in the compartment were so eager to reach their destination

The next day 27th October 2005 we reached the Bangalore city Railway Station by about 2.pm. The Chief of Badrinath Pilgrimage Service received us at the Railway Station. Though there were some inconvenience to pilgrims during their bus journey and also in getting good accommodation in certain places, it is pertinent to state that the over all service rendered by the agency was quite good especially in giving us good food.

During morning breakfast, normally we use to have MASAKLA DOSA, IDLI SAMBAR,PURI SAGU ,RAVI IDLI ETC. On many occasion, wherever possible additional sweets, Gulab zamoon,Zangir, rava ladu etc were served. This in addition to special meal. There is nothing to comment about the food served to us.

In general the whole journey was pleasant and memorable in my life. Hence I made up my mind to put all the facts on paper so that the facts will not be forgotten.

MARATHAN RUN ON 18.5.2008

Sunfeast World 10K Bangalore had organized a Marathan run on 18.5.08 under Harmony for Silver Foundation for Senior Citizens. More than 5000 Senior citizens from the nook and corner of Bangalore participated. Many senior citizens who were members of different Laughter Clubs in Bangalore also participated.
The organizers had made elaborate arrangements to pick up the Senior Citizens from their respective areas. A couple of days before the event, the organizers distributed applications for registration . Each participant had to pay a registration fee of Rs.100/- for registration.
As part of the event, the organizer’s distributed bags containing certain items manufactured by Sun feast to all the participants and also distributed an Event Hand Book containing entry passes, health tips and guidelines.
An Ambulance and a team of doctors were at our disposal and they were moving all along our run way route to meet any eventuality .
On the day of the event ,the designated bus picked us at 6.15.am and by the time we reached Kanteerava Stadium, the venue of the event it was 6.45.am. There were already many participants waiting at the gate to gain entry into the stadium . Those with entry passes were allowed inside . On all the places one could find volunteers manning the respective counters with display boards to help the participants. In addition, there were anchor persons to remind participants to collect their ‘T’ Shirts and to have snacks and coffee/tea.
As part of the programmed, some senior citizens were invited to the dais to explain their experience in keeping good health. All of them without any exception emphasized the advantage of regular walking and exercise for physical fitness. The practice of meditation was also highlighted .
At 8.25 am, the anchor person at the dais announced the call for Marathan Run . At 8.30.am,a Cine Actor Mr.Ganesh who made a name in Kannada Film Industry inaugurated the event by himself participating in the initial run.
A huge gathering of senior citizens above 60 participated in the Marathan Race. People on either side of the road were watching the event and cheering up the participants . The run was for about 8 k.m from Kanteerava Stadium, passing through K.S.C.A. stadium, Cubbon Park, G.P.O. High Court, Vidhana Soudha, State Public Library, Hutson Circle and back to the venue of the event.
All along the vantage points , many sponsors of the event like King Fisher,Wipro, S.B.I etc had made counters to serve packaged drinking water and also Glucose water to the participants.
As the entire stretch of the road was congested with the participants, some of us could not run. However, we could walk certain distance wherever possible and run the remaining.
On our arrival after the run, we were served with a good break fast. While we were busy in eating, the organiser’s announced prizes for those who participated in the Lucky draw and also in the Marathan Run. Apart from this, there were many cultural events for the participants.
After the culmination of the event, the designated buses picked up the participants to their respective destination. However, we could not get into the said bus as there was confusion as the entire area was crowded and blocked with vehicles. Hence self and other friends took autos to reach our destination instead of waiting for bus.
By and large the event was very fine and we enjoyed it.
A TRIP TO RAMANASHRAMA & THIRUVANNAMALAI

Before my retirement from Doordarshan,, somehow it struck me to visit Thiruvannamalai and also Ramanashrama. Earlier, I had read some literature about the saint Sri Ramana Maharishi but I did not had the opportunity, time or inclination to visit the Ashram for obvious reason..

One fine day, I just planned to visit the Ashram and accordingly I booked a ticket to Thiruvanna Malai in a bus proceeding towards Pondichery. During the course of the journey I collected some information about the accommodation and other details from the co-passengers.

The first visit really kindled some light in my life. One of the co-passenger along with his brother was trying to get accommodation at the Ashram but fortunately since I was with them all along the route to the ashram and also the Manager counter, the person who was at the counter bluntly told them they will get accommodation provided they also accommodate me. This is something I never expected. Subsequently, I had to show my official identity to the brothers to convince my bonafides.

The Person at the counter explained in brief the daily routine at the Ashram and we were told that the Ashram is not charging for food or accommodation to its Guests but they are at liberty to pay any donation.

During that period I visited the Skandashramam and Virupaksha cave on the Hill and participated in the daily prayer and other routine rituals. I had an opportunity to visit the Room where the Maharshi left for the heavenly abode and also the Meditation Hall where the Ramama Maharishi used to sit for meditation. This experience made me to visit this place once again.

Last week, I was exchanging my experience with my friend Mr.Lakshminarayan who had also visited it earlier. Subsequently, during the first week of October 07, he expressed his desire to visit the shrine once again and accordingly, he posted a letter to the Manager of the Ashram for accommodation and he got a reply for our visit.

We were given an accommodation for three days and accordingly we planned our visit. On 7th October 07, we started our journey ..It was about 8.30.am when we reached the Bus Station and we got into the bus to Thiruvannamalai at 9.00.am and the same day at 2.pm we reached Ramanashramam. The bus journey from Bangalore to Thiruvannamalai is about 5 hours..

Since our accommodation was already booked, there was no problem in getting a good cottage very close to Ashram .. After settling down at the cottage, we had our lunch . After a short nap, we left the cottage for Ashram for our Tea. Unfortunately, we were late for Tea and hence had to depend upon a hotel nearby.

The Ashram atmosphere as such was very salubrious. It was very interesting to see peacocks everywhere undisturbed.

Between 5.pm and 6.pm there was chanting of the Vedas in front of the Bhagavan Shrine and subsequently, pujas and Paraynam were held at the Shrine.

At 7.30.pm, it was time for Dinner for Guests at the Ashram. The Food served at the Ashram was extremely good. On that particular evening there were about 40 Guests . After dinner, we returned to our cottage and by 9.pm we retired for the day..

The next day, 8th October 07 at about 5.30,am we woke up The Climate as such was very hot, for us it is very difficult to adjust the hot climate. Though, we had fan at each room, I could not get proper sleep in the night. More over I am not used to Fan air.. The fan had no control switch and it was running at high speed. I had to switch off the fan quite often because of its noise.

After bath, we left for Ashram prayer at 6.30.am . After attending morning puja at the Samadi shrine, exactly at 7.am we had our breakfast at the ashram. The breakfast consists of Idli and sambar followed by milk/coffee. It was fine. The milk is being supplied from the ashram cows. As Monday, was a Pradosham day, there was a special puja for the Lingam from 8.am onwards. During the course of puja, it was very interesting to see different types of Arathis like single arati, pancha arati, charka arati, rata arati and Kumba arati. It is very interesting to listen to the Vedic recitation and also their vibrations.

It is very pertinent to mention here that there were many foreign devotees visiting this Ashram frequently to pay their devotion to the Maharshi. The meditation hall is always occupied by devotees. Generally, it is open from 4.am to 12.00 noon and 2.pm to 8.30.pm .

While going through the Ashram premises one can see 4 Samadhis specially constructed in memory of a cow , a dog, a deer and a crow which the Maharshi was very fond of . Apart from this, one Samadhi is also built separately for Dr.Cohan who served Maharshi till his death.

After this visit, we engaged an auto for our Giri Pradakshina. On our way we saw Ashta Lingas dedicated to Lord Indira, Agni, Yama, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera, Nairutya, and Eeshanya. We also visited the temple built in memory of late Seshadri Iyer, who took care of Ramana Maharshi during his younger days. After these visits we returned to Ashram and at 11.30.am we had our Lunch which consists of Payasam,Rasam,Curry,Sambar,Butter Milk, chutney etc in connection with Pradosha puja.

After Lunch, we returned to our Cottage by 12 noon. Between 12 noon and 1.pm we were at the Sri Ramana Centenary Library which had a large selection of books and magazines on Religion, philosophy and literature in all major Indian and European languages. From 1.pm to 3.30.pm we had a good nap. At 4.pm we entered the Ashram premises for Tea/milk. In the meanwhile we visited the book stall at the Ashram and just went round the book stall to see various books published by the Ashram. However, we evinced keen interest in a small book on ‘Ramana Maharshi – Answers 100 questions.

Later we entered the Meditation Hall and did Meditation for 25 mts. and spent the remaining time in the prayer hall watching the special puja on Monday. While the puja was in progress, a private TV channel took some shots for telecast. After Puja, a regular Bhajan team started their recitation praising Lord Shiva and also the Maharshi till 7.15.pm .At 7.30,pm we had our dinner and by 8.pm we returned to our cottage and retired for the day at 9.00 pm.

The next day 9th October 07 we woke up at 5.30 am and participated in the prayer and puja at 6.45.am. At 7.am we had our breakfast consists of Idli and Molagapudi. At 7.30.am we took an auto to the main temple in Thiruvannamalai – Arunachaleswara temple and Abudamba temple. The temple has its own architectural style with a big Rajagopuram. The Mahadwaram is very attractive . We also had an opportunity to see the place where Ramana Maharshi first hide himself at Pataleswara temple. This place has now been renovated.

After visiting the Thiruvannamalai temple, we returned to Ashram for lunch at 11.30.am. We paid a sum of Rs.500/- as donation to the Ashram for our stay and food. In all we were at the Ashram cottage for two days only. We got into a bus bound for Bangalore at 12.30.pm and reached Bangalore by 6.30.pm .

By and large , the visit had recharged my life from the regular monotony .In case if anybody wants to visit the Ramana Maharshi Ashram, please send them your programme in advance either by post or by email. It is worth seeing .

TIRUPATI VISIT

I had an inclination to visit Tirupati long back. The last visit was during 2001 after the marriage of Smitha. We thought it fit to visit Titrupati alongwith Balaji and his parents.Somehow, the programme was chalked out in advance after getting a fax message from PA to Endowment Minister of Andhra Pradesh, the accommodation and darshan programme was fixed. The entire exercise of visiting the shrine was very meticulous. After receiving the fax message, we had booked our train tickets to Tirupati and back. Since we had sufficient time after the darshan of the Lord , we also hired a taxi to visit Sri Kalahasti temple and other temple..

Later, somewhere during 2004, when I was working with Mr.Venkateswarlu, the then Director of DDK,Bangalore, through the good office of Station Engineer,DDK,Tirupathi. I visited Tirupati and Kalahasthi in a Car. This programme was well organized by Doordarshan people and I did not have much botheration.

Now, after a gap of nearly three years I visited Tirupati along with Balaji’s parents. Though we wanted to visit on 9th July 07 coincided with the 60th birth day of Balaji’s father, due to some preoccupation, this could not materialize. However, finally, we booked our tickets under K.S.T.D.C. tour package leaving Bangalore on 20th July 07 evening .

As per schedule, we left our place at 6..45.pm and reached Badami house at 7.45.pm. After checking our tickets at the counter we occupied our seats. Exactly at 8.pm, the bus left for Tirupati.

As usual the Manager of the Team introduced himself to all the passengers and explained the programme for the day.

Our first halt was at Narasapur for dinner at 9.pm. Our fellow passengers had their dinner at Kamat Restaurant where the bus halted. Though, the Hotel was neat and clean, the food served was not good. However, we had taken some chapathis and sabji with us and the quality and quantity was quite sufficient for us.

Then after dinner, by about 9.45.pm, we left to Tirupati. It was 2.30.am, the next day 21.7.07, when we reached Tirupati. We were taken near the Sudarshan Seva ticket counter and asked to stand in Que to procure the Darshan ticket. By about 3.30.am. they issued the tickets after taking our finger prints and collecting Rs.50/- per ticket . Later we left to nearby Hotel SRIVARI SANNIDHI, opposite to SB.I. Staff training centre, Tirupati. We were allotted a double room accommodation with an additional bed at Room No.212 in the Hotel.

After taking some rest and bath,we started our journey towards Sri Kalahasthi. This temple is 40.km away from Tirupathi. By about 7.30.am we reached Kalahasti temple. Though it was a Saturday, there was no rush at that particular time. Anyhow we had good darshan. While returning ,there was some confusion to locate our bus. At last we located our bus. We had our breakfast nearby Ganesh hotel. The food items served was good.

We left Kalahasthi by 9.am. to reach Kapileswara swamy temple, which is 4.k.m from Tirupathi. After our darshan at Kapileswara swamy temple, we proceeded towards Srinivasa Mangapura, which is 16 km from Tirupathi. After our worship at Srinivasa Mangapura we had our lunch at Hotel Bheema around 12.45.pm. The food served was just o.k. After our Lunch we left for our Hotel for rest.

At 4.pm, the T.T.D. bus came to pick us up to the abode of Lord Venkateswara,Tirupati Tirumalai Devasthanam. From Tirupati to Tirumalai ,it is 22 km . By the time we reached the uphill, it was around 5.15.pm. About 11 people had their head tonsure at a designated place. I also offered my hair to the service of Lord. It was around 6.30,PM we were in the Que.I have not seen such a huge crowd. Already there was a serpentine Que. I was very much worried about the darshan. In our Sudarshan Seva ticket, it was clearly mentioned that the time allotted for our darshan was at.9.pm. By 7.30.pm the Que started moving and when we reached a certain point, we were impounded in a Hall where lots of seats and TV screens were installed. For nearly half an hour we were impounded due to the visit of A.P,. Governor and later when he left, the gates were opened, there was a mad rush. One can seeing the madness of the crowd. The people were gushing from one end to the other without any mercy on kids or mothers carrying babies . The ultimate aim of the crowd was to see the Lord, collect the Ladu and catch their bus.At last we had the darshan of the Lord at about 10.15.pm , even here also no one was allowed near the sanctum as was done on earlier occasion.. The security personnel inside the temple were helpless.

We reached the Bus terminus by 10.30.pm and the Manager was waiting for our return and asked us to eat the fast good available nearby. It was around 11.30.pm when we reached our Hotel. The Manager made an announcement in the bus that we should get ready by 5.30.am the next day 22.07.07.

The next day 22.07.07, we vacated the SRIVARI SANNIDHI HOTEL and visited the Govindaraja temple at 6.30.am. We purchased Tomala Seva tickets along with other pilgrims and sat for the puja. Later, around 9.30.am, we had our Breakfast in a nearby Hotel, Balaji Woodlands. Subsequently, we reached the Padmavathi temple at 10.30.am which is nearly 4.km from Tirupati. The Manager of the team was able to get us quick darshan.

After the temple visit, we started our journey towards Bangalore. On the way near Chitoor we had our Lunch at a Hotel manned by Reliance Group. The ambiance at the Hotel was really good. One side they had a big petrol station and toilet facilities and on the other, a sales counter for eatables and a good restaurant . The lunch served to us was really good.

By the time we reached the Badami House, the K.S.T.D.C office it was around 5.30.pm. By 6.pm we were at our place.

By and large we had a good darshan of Lord Venkateswara . There were some hurdles initially but the net result was very good.

A VISIT TO VAISHNODEVI & OTHER PLACES

Munna had an inclination to visit vaishno devi and other places. He wanted Rajikkaa and myself to accompany him and as desired by him I planned my programme on 23rd ApriI 08 to enable me to join Rajikka from Coimbatore.

As per schedule, I reached Coimbatore on 24th April 08 and after two days sojourn, we started our journey to Mumbai on 26th April 08 . S.R.K had booked a call taxi the previous day and it picked us up from the forest campus at 8.a.m. By the time we reached the Coimbatore airport ,it was 9.am.

For Rajikka, it was her first flight journey and she was so exited on reaching the Coimbatore airport . All along our journey to airport, she was murmuring something and later I came to know that she was praying herself for our safe journey. Her face literally filled with joy and she was calm and quiet.

As soon as we entered the airport, we collected our boarding pass and by 10.am, we were asked to go near the security check counter. After finishing our security check and sending the baggage inside , we were asked to carry only small baggage with us .We waited till a final announcement was made for boarding the flight.

By 10.15.am ,we were asked to get into the tarmac for boarding the flight to Mumbai.
At last we got into the flight and occupied the designated seat. I got a seat very close to the
window. Rajikka sitting next to me glanced at the passenger and was watching tamasha in
the flight. She had closed her ears with cotton buts to avoid flight noise during its take off.
Thus, there was no response whenever I talked to her as her face simply drew a blank..

Although, I had breakfast in the morning around 8.am., I was a bit hungry by 10.30.am and was waiting for the airhostess to bring something for my belly. Unfortunately, there was nothing forthcoming. When, I was watching towards the door, at last, I saw an young lady in her uniform coming towards my direction and fortunately, for my luck she was asking the fellow passengers whether they want any light refreshments. When my turn came, I ordered for some sandwiches, tea and orange juice. While, I got all the items ordered, but, subsequently the lady came with a smile and a bill on hand for Rs.120/- . For me, I never knew that in Deccan airways and other low cost airlines they charge for the food. I had no other go, except to hand over the cash to her, of course, with a smile and also returned the juice I had ordered. Rajikka was seeing my plight and opened her mouth with a sarcastic laugh.

By about 12.10.a.m,we landed at Mumbai airport and after alighting from the flight and subsequently, collecting our baggage ,we came out from the terminus. As Munna had a heavy schedule at his office, he deputed his driver to the airport and he was waiting for our arrival. Since, I had already seen him during my earlier visit , there was no problem for our transport.

By the time we reached Munna’s Bank at Bandra –Kurla Complex it was 1.30.pm and since it was a Saturday, Munna was waiting to pack up home. Munna was overjoyed to see Rajikka and self. After spending 20 mts with him, we all proceeded towards Borivali flat

Jayanti had prepared a good lunch and left for office. By 2.30.pm we had our lunch and it was 3.pm or so Bhanu and N.K.R arrived to join us to celebrate the Annual Ceremony of father, the next day 27th April 08. Munna had made all arrangements for the Ceremony.

Rajikka was very happy to see the child and it was her first visit to Borivali flat. Self, Munna and N.R.K. visited the Borivali Vegetable market for some purchase for the Ceremony.

On 27th morning, the Cook followed by Vadyar reached Munna’s flat for the annual ceremony of Father. Everything went on well. It was about 2.pm when the Vadyar left the place.. We had our lunch at 2.15.p.m. and later Munna and Jayanti were very busy with their packing for the next day programme. By 5.pm Bhanu and N.R.K. left for Vashi.

The next day 28th April 08 was really hectic for our journey .By 9.30.am, we all left for Mumbai airport in a taxi and reached the airport by 11.am. The flight to Jammu was at 12.05.pm. After checking our luggage and getting the boarding pass, we went to the security check and later boarded the aircraft. For Rajikka, it was her second flight and she enjoyed the journey.

The jet airlines supplied good lunch and it was enough for us.The aircraft on its way to Jammu also touched the Srinagar Airport for 25 mts to ferry some more passengers and it was 4.45.pm when we touched the Jammu airport. Munna’s office colleague with an AC vehicle was waiting for our arrival and he took us to Katra which is close to Vaishnodevi temple. The journey time from Jammu airport to Katra was nearly one and half hours. By 6.15.pm we reached the Hote Malati- cum Guest House.

While, self and Rajikka were accommodated in an AC room in the ground floor, Munna and family were accommodated in an AC room in the II floor. The Hotel as such was good and convenient. After some rest and food we went round for a small stroll in the nearby shopping area and also to look upon the hill areas which were fully decorated with lights. It was really worth seeing. The climate was moderate and for us we can manage with ordinary fan rather than A.C. After dinner, we rtired for the day.

The next day 29th April 08, we got up early and had our breakfast at 9.am.By 10.30.am we were ready for the next programme. Between 10.30.am and 11.am we procured some prasadam items to be taken to the temple for puja. By 11.30.am we got into an auto rickshaw and proceeded towards the Helipad nearby to enable our journey to the temple.

By 12.10.pm Rajikka ,Muna and family entered one of the Helicopters run by Deccan airways. After 10 mts, I followed them. Before entering the helicopter all of us underwent security check and also got our weight checked . Later, after reaching the other side of the Helipad and collecting the V.I.P passes for our special entry at gate No.4,all of us joined together for our journey to the temple. At that time, I was fully hungry and wants to eat something, but what to do. After second thought I took some biscuits and apple and started eating. Some people were steering at my plight. I was eating without any concern.

The temple was nearly 3 km away from the Helipad, a Dolly was arranged to carry Rajika till the temple and the rest walked the distance.. All along the route, people were chanting Jai Mataji, Jai Mataji. One can see a panoramic view of the temple on one side and the mountains and hills on the other. One can see people walking the distance right from the foot of the hill. Some people engaged poney, horses to carry them. Some elderly people took the help of dollies. It took nearly one and a half hours for us to reach the temple. The temple is managed by a board and it looks after the welfare of the temple and also the pilgrims.

We had the darshan of Goddess Vaishnodevi at 2.pm. We were fortunate to have the darshan of Goddess Lakshmi,Parvathi and Saraswathi at one place. The priest sitting close to the deity received the dry fruits carried in the polythene cover and subsequently placed before the Goddess and return the same as Prasadam for distribution.

After having the darshan near the sanctum sanctorum ,and while returning, Rajikka somehow managed to re-enter the temple followed by Munna and his daughter. Initially, the sentry tried to prevented them from entering the temple, but after second thought and seeing Rajikka’s age allowed them without any second thought.

Self and Jayanthi though we tried to enter the temple second time, we could not do so. Anyhow we had the darshan of the deity for the first time and we should be happy with it.

While returning from the temple, Manaswini got her hair tonsured as an offering to Goddess Vaishnodevi. After walking for 10mts or so Rajikka got into her Dolly to be dropped at the Helipad. In the meanwhile, Munna and Jayanthi engaged two horses to ferry them to the Helipad site. Manaswini got into Munna,s fold during the journey. After walking for a few minutes,I had a second thought and I too followed Munna in a horse so that I could also reach the Helipad site in time to avoid any delay due to weather.

After reaching the Helipad site,we came to know that the Helicopter service has been stopped due to inclement weather. It was nearly 5.30.pm, when there was some hope from the helicopter counter that the service has been resumed. At that point of time, there was some hope among the pilgrims who were waiting for their turn and ultimately everybody wanted to get into the helicopter and there was some sort of a rush. All the pilgrims who were waiting for their turn were more or less hungry and tired. When our turn came, all of us rushed towards the helicopter to reach down the hill. It was 6.15.pm when we reached the down the hill and reached our Guest House.

In the evening, all of us had some bread slice, plantain and tea. By 9.pm we all went round Katra for some purchase, and retired for the day.
The next day 30.4.08, we got up early and had our bath. Jayanthi prepared oats payasam in the Guest House. It was very delicious and I had two glass fully. The vehicle reached the Guest House by 9.am and we all left for Jammu. On the way we visited the Raghunath temple. The entire area is occupied by security forces to avoid any attack by terrorists . The temple and the surrounding areas are kept clean and we had a good darshan of Lord Rama, seeta and Lakshmana .In the temple complex we also saw the Spatika Lingam installed earlier and we performed special puja. Later Munna and Jayanthi went for shopping at Jammu market area. Self and Rajikka were sitting in the car and after a gap of 30 mts all of us proceeded towards Hotel K.C.Residency for Lunch. The lunch was quite good and delicious.

After Lunch, we proceeded towards Jammu airport and it was 1.40.pm when the car reached Jammu airport .We got entry into the airport through Airport authority office and got security check up. Due to some problem at Delhi airport, our flight was delayed by an hour .At last it left by 3.15.pm and touched Delhi airport by 4.45.pm.

At Delhi airport, Munna’s colleague had arranged a Tata Indica car for our journey by road to Agra. Since it was evening 5.pm, the climate as such was very moderate. The journey as a whole was very pleasant. The road was very fine and the vehicle was moving at a very good speed and as a result I was sleepy. Sitting at the front seat near the Driver was really unpleasant for me as the driver was finding it difficult to drive. I was helpless ,as I could not control my sleep. Normally ,I do get sleep whenever I occupy the front seat. Of course one can experience a cool breeze when the car is moving at a high speed . Sitting in the car and experiencing the cool breeze coupled with a small dose of sleep without any disturbance is fantastic . This experience one should feel in his life time.It was about 9.30.pm when we reached Munna’s colleague’s place. Chapathis and other dishes were served at their house. By and large the items served was very good. More than the food, their hospitality was very good.
After our dinner, we left for our Guest House which was very near the famous Taj Mahal. We were accommodated in an AC room at the fifth floor of the building After planning for the next day programme, we retired for the day.

The next dahy 1st May 2008, as planned earlier we got up earlier and had a cup of tea at 7.am and exactly by that time the designated car picked us up for our visit to Taj Mahal Munna’s friend accompanied us. An official from the Archeological survey of India also joined us in explaining the various historical places in and around Taj Mahal. We were fortunate in getting more information about Taj Mahal through him. He also helped us in clicking some good shots. By the time we completed our visit to Taj Mahal, we were exhausted and had our breakfast in a South Indian Hotel. The food served was not so good.Later by 10.30.am we left for the Guest House. After leaving Rajikka,Jayanthi and the child at the Guest House, we left for shopping. We visited a few shoe shops and purchased some footwear’s/chappal to Munna. I had a pair of sports shoe. By and large the quality of leather goods in Agra were really good when compared to other places.
After our lunch,we left by car to Mathura, the abode of Lord Krishna. It was at about 4.30.pm or so we were inside the temple. The place was fully guarded by C.R.P.F. jawans. There were lot of security checks before our entry is made. As we were accompanied by B.O.B friends, we had no problem in having our darshan. Later, we visited the famous Brin davan, where the lord used to spent more time and other temples
After hectic programme at Madhura, by 8.pm we reached the Madhura Railway Station and boarded the Madhura - Allahabad train .The next day 2nd May 2008,the train reached Allahabad late by 40 mts. Ragu received us at the Allahabad railway station, and we were taken in his car to his place. We had a cordial welcome at his house. After bath and breakfast, we proceeded towards the designated Vadyar’s house to perform the rituals It was about 10.am when we started our programme.Later, we were asked to have bath at Triveni Sangamam. The same day, at 4.30.pm, Munna had arranged a Car for our journey to Varanasi. It took nearly three hrs to reach Varanasi. As Munna’s office people had arranged accommodation at Banaras Hindu University Guest House and his colleagues also accompanied in a car, we did not find any problem in reaching the Guest House. We were accommodated in two AC rooms 9 & 10 respectively. The rooms were quite comfortable. The Guest House had its own Dining Hall and we had our Dinner, the same day at 8.30.pm. After planning our programme for the next day, we retired for the day.
The next day,3.5.08, at 6.30.am the designated car reached the Guest House and we proceeded towards the Vadyar’s house. After, preliminary discussion,by 7.30.am a boat man accompanied us to the Ganges.. By and large all of us had a very good darshan of Lord Vishwanatha and Vishalakshi. After the temple visit, we had our dinner in a nearby hotel and returned to our Guest House. It was about 9.30.pm we retired for the day.
The next day 4.5.08 happens to be an Amavasya. Munna and Jayanthi left the child in my custody and left for early morning darshan at Vishwanatha temple at 6.am. They were back at 8.am.Later after performing the Tarpanam and brfeakfast we left for temple visit. We visited the famous Sankat morcha and Kali temples.Later Munna purchased some banaras sarees and we had our lunch near Saranath temple at 2.p.m. We took some snaps at Saranath temple and at the museum the Ashoka pillar is worth seeing. We went round the saranath temple where Budha gave his surman to his disciple.By 6.pm we were back to our Guest House. After rest and gossip,we had our dinner at 8.pm. The driver after lunch at Bhanu’s place left for Borivali .We stayed in vashi up to 11th May 08 and during the period we paid courtesy visit to Hari mama’s place and also visited a few temples nearby.
On 11th May we all visited Chembur to see Brahmashri. Harihara Sarma at his house. After exchange of pleasantries and discussion we took some photographs with him. Bhanu was instrumental in this visit. He was nearly 86 years.

Although, the journey was boring, I could somehow manage to read some pages now and then from Bhagvat Geetha.to keep myself engaged. At last, the train reached Bangalore city station by 9.20.pm and within 30 minutes I reached my place.
By and large the pilgrimage rejuvenated my health as I was in the company of my kith and kin.

A family Fun Trip to Mercara

Mercara Trip from 9th to 10th June 2007

This month we had a good trip to some important tourist spots in Karnataka. The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation had several packages on their list. Almost all the packages are very good. . After dilly dallying, we decided on a two day tour to Golden temple Nisarga Dhama,Talacauvaery &. Mercara, Accordingly, four days in advance we booked 7 tickets through an agent in Hanumanthanagar. The package is inclusive of accommodation. Rs.1,200/-per seat.

Every time we use to plan our visit to temple sites. However, just to have a change in our programme, we planned this package.

On 9th June 2007, a party of seven people started our journey. We left our place at 6.30.am and reached the starting point “Badami House” to board the K.S.T.D.C bus about 7.am.. Since it was a Second Saturday, all the seats were full. In fact, this is the second bus, we could manage.

The bus took the Mysore route, the Guide Mr.Yesudas, explained the programme of the day at the beginning of our journey.

During our journey, he showed the place where the actual shooting for Sholey was done. This place is in Ramanagar enroute to Mysore. Because of its proximity with huge rocks and mountain terrains, the producer of the film selected this site and named this area as Ramgarh fort. Even now tourists passing through this area recalls the scene shot in this particular area. Before Chennapatna the bus was stopped for our breakfast in a nearby hotel Raj Bhavan.

During the course of our journey we passed through Srirangapatna Fort, the Capital of Tippu sultan. This was ruled by two Muslim rulers for 36 years namely Hyder Ali and his son Tippu Sultan between1763-1799. We also saw from a distance the Lord Ranganatha swamy temple which is 1,200 years old and also the burial place of Tippu Sultan.

Our first visit was to Golden Temple in Bailukuppa. The entire area has been maintained very neat and clean. Here we saw the Tibetian Monastery wherein the statue of Buddha as well the tomb has been fully gold plated. We were told that when the Chinese army invaded Tibet in 1952 and took over Lasha including the Patola Palace, Dalai Lama left Tibet for India with his followers and later he approached Nehru to accommodate his people till they attain their Independence. Hence on humanitarian grounds a vast area in Bailukuppa, a hamlet in Karnataka was given to them for their rehabilitation. With the assistance of Government of India and aids from other countries, the entire stretch of land has been well developed.

The Monastery, built by them is one of the tourist Spot in Karnataka. This place has also got a residential accommodation for Buddhist Monks to learn the teachings of Lord Buddha. This place is worth seeing. One important feature of this place is that no foreigners are allowed inside the premises without valid permission from the Central Government.

The bus halted at Kushalnagar near a Hotel Aditi for Lunch . Since we had taken some items namely, Curd rice, lemon rice and also some chapathis for our bus journey, we finished curd rice and lemon rice for our lunch. Geetha prepared chapathis with sabji for our journey. Later we proceeded towards Cauvery Nisarga Dhama, where we went round for a boating. We had to reach the boating area through a hanging bridge for 5 minutes. The child Aishwaraya who accompanied us had an Elephant ride.

There is every scope for improvement in this place. The Department could have taken little more interest to make this place more attractive by planting more trees and also by up keeping the boating place. A guide inside the area is a must during visiting season. People do visit these areas at week ends invariably and it is high time that if private participation are also involved, people can make their visit more meaningful. Every effort should be taken to prevent people carrying plastic bags inside the Dhama.

After our visit to Nisarga Dhama, we proceeded towards Mercara(Madikeri). It is the capital of Kodagu, the land of the fiercely loyal and martial kodavas, many people from this place have earned their name and fame in the Indian Army, like Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimmaiah. Kodavas are extremely proud of their heritage. The only way to this hill town is by road from Mysore. Here we saw the natural beauty in full strength with coffee plantation, paddy fields, grass lands, pepper and cardamom vines and orange orchards. and all other plants in and around the hills and mountains. This magnificient environ has made Kodagu being called the “Scotland of India” .

On the way we saw the Abbey Falls.which is located inside an estate where water gushes over rocks After reaching certain distance we had to board a Jeep to reach Abbey Falls. Literally, we have to walk for one and a half km distance to reach the Abbey Falls which is situated in a very steep place. The tourists were enjoying the falls and taking bath also. By the time we reached our Jeep point, almost all the people in our bus were exhausted and many of us had a good tea at a nearby tea stall.

Amidst all this flows the life giving Cauvery, regarded as the source of life by the Kodavas. Medikeri seems like other countless hill towns in the country with steep, narrow roads and houses .

The Rajs’s seat in Madikeri has occupied a pride of place, a cliff-edge point where , it is believed the Maharajas used to enjoy sunsets. On clear days, sunsets are watched with silent reverence However, due to bad weather, we could not see it There was some drizzling also. We proceeded towards the Raja Seat Garden in Mercara which is really worth seeing. The Garden with blooming flowers as a whole has been maintained very well by the Department of Horticulture. There is a musical fountain also. At 7.00 pm the display at the musical fountain started which was colourful and breathtaking. We took some snaps also. The child Aishwarya who accompanied us had a merry round in the Toy Train which is an additional attraction. It is pertinent to mention here that from the Raja seat one can see the entire area.

After our Garden visit, we proceeded towards our hotel for stay. We were accommodated at Popular Woodlands. This Hotel seems to be good. By about 8.30.pm we had our Dinner. The Chapathis and curd rice which we had taken with us, served the purpose. We had a good sleep at the Hotel and had a good hot water bath around 5.00am the next day.

The next day i.e. on 10.6.07, after our morning tea ,we were ready by 6.30.am. and proceeded towards Omkareshwara temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here the temple is
constructed under the Mogul architecture. We were told by the Guide that when the Muslim rulers were destroying the Hindu temples in many parts of India, this temple was architecturally styled like a mosque to prevent the onslaught of Muslim rulers.

After the temple visit, we proceeded towards Talacauvery, in the Brahmagiri hills, the birth place of Cauvery.. The Birth place of Cauvery has been maintained neatly and a small Shiva temple has been built a year back .From the top of the Brahma Giri one can have a panoramic view. However, because of heavy fog nothing was visible. The starting point of Tala Cauvery was found to be through a small spring which flows through the mountain and flows through Tamilnadu after entering the Plains and finally mix with the Sea at Bay of Bengal. At the Tala Cauvery, only Shankarji had a dip and he enjoyed the bath. I could not venture for any dip due to chillness.

While returning from Tala Cauvery, we purchased coffee powder, honey and other Spices. .

We enjoyed our journey all along. Some boys and girls who travelled with us entertained all the passengers by singing film songs individually and also some group started Antakshari One young girl, anchored the entire programme

By about 9.45.am we had our breakfast at a K.S.T.D.C. Hotel at Bagamandala. It is pertinent to mention here that the tiffin items provided by the Restaurant was not good and even the child Aishwarya refused to eat the tiffin.
From Bagamandala we proceeded towards the ancient Bhugandeswara Temple of 1790 period. Now a major renovation work is going on inside the temple. This temple is named after Bhaganda Muni who installed the Shivalingam at this site. The temple had attracted the attention of many royal dynasties of Karnataka who used to worship. The King Doddavirajendra renovated this temple damaged during the battle in 1790. We also saw the place of Triveni Sangamam wherein the Cauvery river merges with two other rivers and flows through near the temple. People were seen having a holy dip at the place of Triveni Sangamam and some of them were seen performing the rituals to the departed souls.

After the temple visit we reached Gonikoppa at 1.20.pm where we had our lunch at Hotel Guru Prasad. From here we started our journey to Nagarhole forest area by 3.15.pm All the people in the bus were very eager to see the wild animals in the Nagarhole forest area. There was a rush for the purchase of tickets for the Safari. It was Rs.95/- per individual. At 4.pm we got into a 31 seater bus to ferry the people inside the forest area. All along the way we could see only some deers. However, we could not see any wild animals at all. However, at the fag end of our journey, we could see some elephant

By 5.30pm, we left Nagarhole to Bangalore .It was a 5 hours journey. On the way we had our dinner at Mylari Hotel at Maddur which is famous for Maddur vada.

It was about 10.40 pm when we reached Bangalore. We alighted near the Byatarayanpura Police Station and got into two autos to ferry us back to our place.
.
By and large, it is very pertinent to mention here that the success of our programme was due to proper planning in advance coupled with co-operation from all the members.

A Memorable visit to Puttabarthi

During the last two months Bhanu & Ramachandran is to correspond with me about their plan to visit Puttabharthi, the abode of Satya Sai Baba. Though I knew something about Prashanthi Nilayam, I did not know the amount of progress being done at Prashanthi Nilagham and also Puttabarthi. On a request from Bhanu, I started collecting information about the bus, accommodation and other facilities available at Puttabharpathi. My friend Mrs Kalyani gave me some information about the facilities and darshan. She also gave some telephone numbers pertaining to some good hotels. Accordingly, I booked accommodation at Hotel Sai plaza for our journey on 26th December 06. Unfortunately, we could not get KSRTC Bus reservation on 26th December 06 as per our plan. Hence we were forced to change our schedule to 27th .and accordingly the tickets were purchased in Raja Hamsa leaving at 10.45.am On 27th December 06, we left home at 9.30.am and boarded B.M.T.C. to Kempegowda Bus Terminus. Due to some technical. Snag , the bus arrived late at about 11.15.am. andleft Bus station at 11.3o.am. There were half a dozen seats vacant.. Perhaps this might be due to an earlier Vulvo Bus to Puttaparthi. Seats were very good and comfortable. So to say the entire journey was very enjoyable. While Bhanu & Company were busy talking each other since there seats were very close by, I had to see some good company to talk. Fortunately, to my luck a college student from Hyderabad was next to my seat. I just started introducing and after sometime we were good friends. The boy is from Darjiling . He was traveling with his sister and a relative. He was quite resourceful and gave me some information about accommodation etc., at Puttaparthi. It was about 4.pm when we reached Puttaparthi Bus terminus. The entire family of the boy was helpful in guiding us to the Prashanti Nilayam. Since we were new to the place, they literally took us near the accommodation counter. Since Bhanu could not sleep on floor and also new to the place, we just moved to the hotel were we had booked accommodation earlier. Due to some communication gap, they had cancelled the accommodation and there was no room for our reach. However, we were given accommodation at a higher rent of Rs.1500/- per day. As there was no other alternative we had to accept the offer and pay the advance. We occupied the hotel room around 4.30.am. and by 5.pm after refreshing ourselves we left for Prashanthi Nilayam for prayer between 5.pm to 5.30.pm The visit to Prashanthi Nilayam was quite exiting. This place is really fine and there is lot of discipline in the Nilayam. The entire area is neatly organized and the volunteers were doing their job very meticulously. We waited for Baba’s darshan, but could not see him. However, we participated in the regular Bhajan from 5.pm to 5.30.pm. Normally, Baba will also participate in the Bhajan. Since he was exhausted due to Christmas programmes on 25th December 06, he could not make up. In the meanwhile, we alsosearched for some good accommodation at a lesser rate.
-It is pertinent to mention here that the Prashanthi Nilayam, the abode of Sri Satya Sai Baba has a fantastic building consist of a big prayer hall which could accommodate more than 5 to 6 thousand as per my estimate. Perhaps this might be even more. The entire hall was jam packed. At the front entrance of the Prashanti Nilayam, one can see Maha Ganapathi Statue adorned majestically drawing attention of one and all and on the other side, one can see the statues of Rama,Seetha and Lakshmana along with Hanuman. The entire building housing the Prashanthi Nilayam is neatly kept. For the convenience of the devotees, there were separate Halls for South Indian, Western and North Indian foods. .Only vegetarian foods are served in these Halls. In addition there were Coffee/tea stalls and also a Bakery to meet the needs of the devotees. During our visit to these places we saw almost all the halls are crowded with devotees. Exactly between 7.am to 8,30,am it is breakfast time. One can get good breakfast comprising of idli.pongal, vada ,uppuma or other items and sweets also. From 11.30.am to 1.30pm it is lunch time. Like wise in the evening from 4.pm to 6.pm it is tea time and 7.pm to 8.30.pm it is Dinner. One can get good chapatti and curry etc including curds rice or simple meals. Each item they charge Rs.2/- only. For us for Rs.6/- we had good food. One should admire the patience and also the pressure under which the volunteers are at these canteens work. One can see their devotion and attention in their work. The seva attitude among people irrespective of their region, language and caste can be seen in the Prashanthi nilayamSince this was my first visit so also of Bhanu & Co, we were thrilled to see the gathering of Sai deavotees. After our prayer, we just roamed the campus of Prashanthi Nilayam. We had our dinner by about 7.pm and later roamed near the main building and later retired to our room. As we were exhausted due to bus journey we slept early. The next day 28th morning, Bhanu woke up early to have darshan of Baba.. It was nearly 4.am when she reached the Prashanthi Nilayam. However, self and N.K.R reached the place by 7.30.am. As usual we waited for Bhajan and at stroke of 9.am it started and ended exactly at 9.30,am. However, there was no sign of Baba in the hall. However, again, we came to know that Baba is likely to give darshan between 3.30.to 4.30.pm. Hence by about 3.30.pm we shifted to a moderate hotel as the rent per day was more in the earlier one. Later by about 4.45.pm baba gave darshan in a closed car and participated in the prayer. He was present till the prayer was over at 5.30.am. . Bhanu had a good darshan and was very happy.. After participating in the prayer meeting, we just entered into the Publication Division and purchased some books,. CDs & .VCD. We also visited the shopping complex nearby and purchased goods worth about Rs.300/- It was about 7.45.pm when we came out and entered the North Indian Cafeteria. We had good food and later returned to hotel for rest and sleep.

On 29th morning, Bhanu again went early for darshan. self and N.K.R. reached Prashanthi Nilayam by 7.30.am and waited for darshan. However before the Bhajan started at 9.am,Baba went in a closed car and participated in Bhajan. Self and N.K.R. after attending to Bhajan and later having our breakfast left for KSRTC booking counter at 10.30.am for booking a Non-AC Mayura Bus for our return journey at 5.pm. It was about about 10.pm when we reached our house. The entire journey was very peaceful, enjoyable and pleasant. I feel such frequent trips is quite necessary for rejuvenation of mind and body.In general I was very much impressed about the progress being made by the Swamiji and his devoted.devotees in transforming the entire Puttaparthi, a hamlet into an international fame. With the swami’s initiativeness, puttaparthi and its surrounding areas were able to get drinking water, good educational institutions, music and vedic schools apart from hitech hospital. People from far flung areas do visit puttaparthi for medical and educational needs. When we go round the entire Prashanthi Nilayam and its surroundings we can see unity in diversity.

Visit to Thiruvayur

Visit to Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur District from7th to 11th January 2007

During January every year the Aradhana celebrations of Saint Thyagaraja is being telecast by Doordarshan and other channels. Whenever, I used to watch this programme over Doordarshan, I always think of visiting Thiruvaiyaru during the celebrations. During my tenure at Doordarshan, though I had many occasion to visit Thanjavur and other adjoining places, somehow it does not materialize.

After my association with Laughter Club and meeting several people, I had an opportunity to meet friends having same set of minds. Whenever, we meet we used to talk about classical music with special emphasis on Saint Thyagaraja and Purandara Dasa. We also discussed about the contributions made by late Muthuswami Dikshithar, Shyama Sastri. and other giants like Oothukkadu Venkasubbaiyer,Mysore Vasudevachar,Swathi Thirunal,Muthaiah Bhagavathar etc. My knowledge about music is literally zero, however right from the beginning I had cultivated the habit of listening to music and enjoy the essence in it. Listening to music at home and also attending to music programmes in Bangalore and elsewhere is part of my hobby. At times whenever, I feel alone and gloomy, it is music which comes to my rescue. There are certain ragas which kindle my spirit the whole day.

I should thank my mother and sister Rajika solely for my interest in classical music. I used to listen to amma and Rajikka rendering various compositions of Saint Thyagaraja,Shyama Sastri and Muthuswami Dishithar. Rajikka even at this age had a rich voice while rendering various compositions. As I said my knowledge about Thala ,swara and laya in music is zero even though I learnt Instrumental music for three years. Somehow thala has not entered into my mind. Sometime I feel ashamed whenever I see youngsters putting thala in music concerts. I really envy them. On various occasions, I have seen young boys and girls sitting at the fore front of the concert hall listening to music aptly and making notes. I am happy that the younger generation are gearing up themselves in classical music and the days are not far off when we can see many people in the field.

With all humility and reverence to Saint Thyagaraja, I made up my mind to attend the 160th Aradhana Celebrations of Sant Thyagaraja being held at Thiruvaiyaru . During a casual talk with my friend Shri Lakshminarayan, I expressed my desire to visit the place and also other places in Thanjavur and adjoining areas. To my surprise, he also wished to visit the place and accordingly we ventured our programme and decided to do so . We planned this programme during November 06.

I enquired with Rajikka and also Doordarshan friends about the actual date of the programme and accordingly we decided to leave Bangalore on the evening of 6th January 2007. Though we made frantic enquiries to reach Thanjavur by train, due to the big event starting from 4th to 9th January 2007, we could not get train ticket . However, I was able to
get K.S.R.T.C. AC Bus Mayura for our journey on 6th January 07. The bus was really quite comfortable. Self and Lakshminarayana boarded the bus at 8.30.pm and reached Thanjavur by 7.am.the next day 7.01.2007. Immediately, on arrival at Thanjavur old bus stand we started enquiring about the hotel accommodation nearby. Due to the Thyagaraja Aradhana celebrations almost all the moderate and economy class hotels were full. Some of the hotels were charging more. However, to our luck we got into a nearby Eswari Lodge for our stay for two days.

After refreshing ourselves , we had our breakfast at nearby Hotel Kartik. It is very unfortunate to mention here that the upkeep and maintenance at the bus stand and surrounding areas are very poor. The authorities have not given their mind for the upkeep at an important tourist place. There is no use in pointing out these lapses when our so called leaders and civic authorities are not bothered about it.

As per plan we walked our way towards the great Brahadeeswara temple at 9.30.am. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This was built by the great Chola King. This temple has been declared as an World Heritage Monument A fine example of Chola architecture. We also visited Parvathi ,Ganesha and Murugan temples. It is pertinent to say that these temples are worth seeing. A large number of foreign tourists do visit these places every now and then. More than 1000 shivalingams followed by nandi were seen in the temple gopuram. One should admire the skill and dedication of the sculptors. The abundant prakara and sanctum sanctorum of the temple is a testimony to the encouragement of the Chola King during their tenure . Here we took some snaps.

:Later. we took an auto to see the Palace of Tanjur Maharaja which is now converted into a gallery where one can see number of art works. The Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji’s Saraswathi Mahal Library is one among the few libraries in the world with texts of the medieval period. It is a treasure house of knowledge. It contains rare and valuable collection of manuscrips, books, maps and paintings. It is an heritage building where one can see many paintings of Ravi Varma. After our visit, we returned to our Lodge at 1.30.pm and rested for sometime and later boarded a bus to Thiruvaiyaru.

It took half an hour to reach Thiruvaiyaru. We immediately went round the place and saw the Samadhi of saint Thyagaraja. I just prostrated before the great Avatara Purusha with all my humility and prayed for sometime. We also saw a huge pandal where two separate platforms were erected for music concerts to enable musicians to render their music one after other without any break. This is an unique event where one can watch the conglomeration of musicians rendering music compositions one after the other. When one programme is going on in one platform, before it could end,. the next participant musician with his accompaniment are ready in the other platform

We were lucky to sit in the front row and could watch the event close by on 7th afternoon. It is very interesting to say that there were number of artists both budding as well as
seasoned senior artists . The pandal as such was full wherein music lovers of India and abroad were seen . In the meanwhile, we collected the V.I.P. Passes to enable our entry to the pandal for the main event on 8.01.2007, the main Pancharathna enclosure. We left the place by 9.30.pm by bus to Thanjavur so as to enable us to prepare for the main event on 8.1.07.

On 8th January 2007 we got up early by 5.am. After our bath and rest we had our coffee nearby restaurant at 7.am . By .7.30.am we had our breakfast and boarded a bus to Thiruvaiyaru. It is a happy to see a lot of bus waiting for passengers to ferry to the Musical extravaganza . By the time we reached the Pandal at Thiruvaiyaru, it was about 8.am.The Pandal was already overcrowded with enthusiastic music lovers However, since we had V.I.P. passes which we collected the previous day, we could get entry into the Pandal without much difficulty. We could watch the programme very close by.

I have not seen such a huge gathering in my life time for a music programme. It is very pertinent to mention here that all the people were seated in a systematic manner. The Musicians comprising vocalists, insrumentalists, percussionists occupied the front row to enable them to render the Pancharathna Krithis of saint Thyagaraja. Earlier, the bronze idol of Saint Thyagaraja was taken in a procession all along the road followed by Oon chavruti Bhajan. One interesting aspect I could notice on the Bhajan route was that every household has put Rangoli in colour in front of their houses. Many musicians did participate in this Bhajan also .It is happy to note that children ,middle aged persons and senior citizens were seated very close by and . some of them carried printed booklet containing the compositions of saint Thyagaraja to enable them to sing the Kritis.

At the stroke of 9.am the Pancharatna Kritis started and ended at 10.am. followed by Maha Mangalarati which is the culmination of the main programme. While the programme was inauguratead on 4th January and concluded on 9.1.07 . After the Maha Mangalarati we got the Prasadam also. Doordarshan, Chennai had made elaborate arrangement for the live telecast of the event. I could also meet some of the colleagues who were earlier working at DDDK,Bangalore.

Later on our way back, we also visited the house of Thyagaraja, which is now under renovation. We also saw a samaradhane in connection with the 160th centenary celebrations of late Thyagaraja.

Before boarding , we also visited the Pancha Nadiswhawar temple constructed by Raja of Thiruvaiyaru, son-in law of Tanjavur Maharaja.. The temple architecture as such was very fine . The temple prakara and sanctum sanctorum was mainly on temple vastu shastra.

At 12.noon we boarded a bus to Tanjavur and reached our Lodge at 12.45.pm and had our lunch at nearby Hotel . After rest and sleep we again boarded a bus to Thitai, a
temple constructed for Guru Bhagavan. We worshipped the lord and got prasadam and left for Thanjavur. At 8.pm, had our dinner and after a stroll we were back to our Lodge and at 10.pm we retired to our bed.
.
On 9th January 07 we woke up at 5.45.am and had our tea at 6.am. After bath, we left the room at 7.30.am and immediately got into a bus for our journey to the temple town Kumbakonum. By about 8.30.am we reached the temple town. It is unpleasant experience at this famous place. The bus terminus was so unhygienic and the upkeep and maintenance is very poor. Although, Thanjavur and Kumbakonum attracts more number of tourists both Indian and foreigners, it is really painful to see the upkeep in almost all the places . Even the hotels, it is very poor standard. It is painful to say that though these places generate more revenue, the service to the people/tourists is very poor.

Immediately after arrival at Kumbakonum bus terminus, we had our breakfast and went round in search of a good hotel accommodation. After searching and searching at last we got into a moderate S.M.Lodge at 9.am which is very close to bus terminus. After dumping our luggage, we boarded a bus proceeding towards Thirunallar, the famous Shaniswara temple near Karaikkal(Pondicherry) . It was about 12.00 noon when we reached the temple. The temple is being maintained very well . We had good darshan of Lord Shiva and also Shaniswara. We offered our prayers for the wellbeing of our family members and also kith and kin . It is very important to mention here that whenever I used to receive my salary, I used to keep a small portion in separate covers. One such covers was designated to Lord Shaniswara and a total of Rs.4000/- was collected in this cover.

All the amount was donated to the temple in turn for special puja/ homa in the name of my grand daughter Aditi,son-in-law and daughter. They will send the prasadam to 411 Vignesh At 1.pm we had our lunch nearby hotel. It was not a hotel actually, it is a house wherein a family is serving the people by providing good food. Of course they charge Rs.20/- per leaf. I rate the food served to us was excellent.

Later after our Lunch we boarded a bus to Karaikal to enable us to reach the other destination Shirikali and Vaideswara temple. During bus journey, suddenly I noticed a fat women occupying the vacant seat next to me. She was aged between 30 to 35 very bulky and I was so much irritated perplexed because she had taken away almost all my sitting place leaving very little to me. I can say I was totally sandwiched by her sitting posture My friend Lakshminarayan who was next to me was enjoying my plight since I was in between them. .I showed my unpleasantness in my face and she also expressed her helplessness. At last, her destination came and before alighting from the bus she asked for forgiveness. I cannot blame her, poor girl. When this is my plight just sitting next to her, what would be the fate of her husband ? imagine ;

During our journey, we come across many cross section of people both rich and poor each having their own grouse. I can start writing episode after episodes without any break. I can say I am very happy and I owe a great dept of gratitude to my Lord Guruvayurappan who is always keeping me in good spirit. I cannot forget those days when I had to undergo misery and sorrow . With all this, now I feel it is negligible.

In the meantime we reached Shirikali , the place where the famous musician Shirikali Govindarajan hails . From Shirikali we changed our bus to Vaideswaran temple . After offering our prayer to Lord Vaideswaran, Murugan and Angarakan we left the place by 5.45.pm and boarded to Kumbakonum and it was 7.pm when we reached the Kumbakonum bus terminus. After having our dinner we returned to our Lodge. Unfortunately, in the lodge we had to face mosquito problem in spite of using the mosquito destroyer. Of course we used fan also. The whole night was Shivaratri. Because of open drainage in and around Kumbakonum, mosquito menace is a common phenomenon .

The next morning, 10th January 07, we woke up at 6.am. After bath, we left for Swamy Malai , the famous Murugan temple, in a mini bus which is about 3.km from Kumbakonum . The roads here are very narrow. Somehow we reached the place at about 8.30.am and we were very lucky to have a Good Darshan of Lord Muruga. We were also fortunate to see a Grand Abhisheka of the Lord with Sandalwood paste, milk etc and later decorated with lot of flowers. For our naked eyes such rare occasions will give lot of satisfaction.. My self and my friend were very happy to see this unexpected event. Here I remember, that saint Purandaradasa in one of his compositions has mentioned that Eyes without seeing such rare events in life is no good. When we are hale and healthy we should make use of the opportunity to see such events.

After taking Prasadam, we boarded a mini bus to Kumbakonum. On the way we alighted near Hotel Venkataramana, and had our morning breakfast. This hotel by and large was very fine both in taste and also its ambiens.

Later we visited nearby all the temples namely, Sarangapani, Kumbeshwara, Kundodhari, Lord Rama. Here each temple has its own temple architecture and has its own historical background. Students of history and archeology do visit these temple frequently for their studies. Although these temples are worth seeing, it is very sad and unfortunate that these temples are not being maintained properly. The upkeep and maintenance of these temples are very poor. I feel if the concerned authorities takes little interest at least by levying some entry fees from the visitors, definitely there will be scope for improvement. While visiting these temples we also visited the Maha Magha Kolum, where for every 12 years Mahangam a big event take place. This is the place where a number of people died due to a stampede occurred during the visit of Jayalalitha .

I feel the temple administration in all the temples are very slag in their approach towards the upkeep and maintenance. It is seen that almost all the temple, lands are misused and encroached. The surrounding areas in some of the temples are full of filth and stagnant water percolating all over. There are no proper water management in the temples. While the people of Kumbakonum boast of their temple town but in reality they do agree about the upkeep and maintenance. Here also there are two to three Bus terminus but all of them are in a very bad shape.

After visiting these temples we just roamed in the busy bazaar streets to find out anything interesting . By 1.30.pm, we had our lunch in a nearby hotel and reached our lodge for rest till 4.pm and later left for booking accommodation.

We got the return journey reservation in KSRTC A/C Mayura which was very comfortable. The same day, around 10.pm we left Kumbakonum and reachead Bangalore the next day 11.1.07 at 7.am.

By and large our trip to Thanjavur and surrounding areas were interesting and fascinating. The entire credit goes to my friend Shri Lakshminarayan who throughout the journey was discussing about the various issues both general and public during our journey.

In conclusion, though KSRTC has a good number of AC buses, it is unfortunate that the management has not taken any initiative to interact with passengers about their service and other facilities . As a passenger friendly, KSRTC should make a survey of good hotel in and around tourist important places and also other destinations to advise their crew members to halt at the designated places only which could cater to the needs of passengers Now the Conductor/driver stops the vehicle at their own convenience instead of taking the passengers into confidence. Also the names of such hotels should be printed in brochures to enable bus passengers to know such information in advance.

It is shocking to see that in many places where the buses normally halt for coffee break and lunch, the unclean and nauseating toilets welcome us.It is unfortunate that no one has complained about these issues.
